Description
Part of a new series called, Talk Paintings.
"The mouth is the central source of linguistic communication and is also associated with romantic conveyance. Our mouths are used to kiss and to speak. I painted these images by layering images of different phrases being articulated. I used diverse paint handling strategies in each layer to create a sense of the disconnect between what is spoken and what is visually articulated by the mouth as we speak. When depicted in a 2 dimensional format like painting, we are denied the sonic component of speech, so the mouth becomes an objectified zone of frustrated desire and frustrated communication. The mouth is often used in the language of advertising and media. These paintings intentionally subvert and make new this familiar pop cultural trope to call into question the objectification of this central point of language and desire."
